Lawn care can be a bit tricky when you have children. You want your lawn to be perfect, but kids will be kids. So how can you treat your lawn and keep it in top condition when you have children that want to run, jump, and play in the grass, basically making a child proof lawn?

Here’s where to start…

Don’t neglect the lawn care basics.

First thing first, if you want a beautiful green lawn regardless of if you have children or not you should implement the lawn care basics and best practices.

  • Watering regularly but not over-watering.
  • Keeping your lawn trimmed to a reasonable height.
  • Spraying for pests if you notice any problem areas.

Now it’s no secret, the best lawn care tactic, if you have children or grandchildren, is to keep them off of your lawn as much as possible. Definitely hard to do, but you could try giving them indoor activities or take them to the park. That might work sometimes, but it’s almost unavoidable. The children will one day have a play date with your lawn. So it’s an absolute must that you take steps to child-proof it.

How to child proof your lawn.

Shockingly, this isn’t as hard as it sounds. All you have to do is stay a bit vigilant and continue to treat your lawn with care.

Here are a few tips:

  • In the summertime children love to have fun in the sun. So on more than a few occasions your yard might be host to a Slip-n-Slide, an inflatable pool, or other summertime yard toys. To keep this from becoming a disaster for your lawn make sure you move the yard toys to a new location daily to keep the grass beneath them from turning brown.
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate. Make sure you let the children know to treat your lawn with care. That means no digging and stomping on the grass or plants.
  • If possible install a clear walking path within the yard to decrease the amount of foot traffic on your lawn.
  • Designate an area in your yard for the children to play and make sure they stay within their play area.

And once again keep watering, feeding, and taking care of your lawn as you would if you didn’t have children. If you follow these tips, your lawn will always be in top condition regardless of if the kids play in it from time to time or not. Enjoy!
